THOMAS HOLM

Thomas Holm är en svensk konstnär född 1957 i Stockholm, men bor och arbetar i Abbekås.

Jag vill måla och få egna upplevelser av mitt måleri. Det är ett slags figurativt actionpainting där kickarna kommer efter att jag till slut backat och tittat på vad jag har gjort. Att måla av finner jag ointressant.

 

Sedan 1989 har mitt måleri varit  figurativt, då det monokroma måleriet lämnades.

Favoritkonstnärer, gamla som nya Tintoretto, Paula Rego, Titian, John Currin, Lisa Yuskuvache, Camille Corot, Jenny Saville, John Constable, Marlene Dumas, Michelangelo och Cecily Brown.

Att måla textiler, tyger och stoffligheter kommer från mitt tidiga modeintresse, där jag en gång startade på Marc O´ Polo efter Beckmans skola i Stockholm. Men teckning och måleri tog överhand och Köpenhamns Konstakademi tog vid. 

​

Texter om samtiden sammankopplade med underbara engelska landskap med inspiration från äldre konst gjorde att debuten passade in i tiden.

​

Tekniken är en del av upplevelsen och jag skissar i akrylfärg, äggtempera och därefter i olja med a la prima- och lasyrteknik. Jag är intresserad av pigment och att blanda egna färger.

​

Figurerna idag är möjligtvis svårbestämda vad gäller kön och läggning, men i mitt fall är det bara färg och en kick, centralt är att få se något jag aldrig skulle kunna ha sett annars.

THOMAS WORLD

Ever since I studied fashion design at Beckman’s school of design in Stockholm in the 80s, I

have been interested in clothes, cloth, fabrics and accessories both contemporary and historical. I continued my studies at the Royal Art Academy in Copenhagen. They arranged trips to different places, and I was inspired by Italian renaissance, baroque and Islamic patterns. I read a lot of books primarily art books and get a lot of inspiration from these and also from journeys to the south of Europe.

 

When I work in my studio by the ocean in the south of Sweden I create a world mixed with stories from literature, art, music and whatever I listen to on the radio. My artworks consist of layers of sometimes oil colours sometimes tempera, like the renaissance and baroque painters did. I buy pigments and mix the colours like in the old days. I like to get a depth in the paintings with the layers and the pigments, which you cannot get in another way.

 

I dream a lot and sometimes you will see the themes of the dreams in the paintings, a whole world of human beings, often women in a landscape from the south. Have you ever seen a well-dressed woman with guns in her hands? No, neither have I, but in a painting you can see it. And handbags, what´s inside? It is an enigma not for a man to see.

Close to my home there is an old castle, Svaneholm castle, built 1530, inside there is a museum which among many other artefacts contains gentries dresses in costly materials as silk with embroideries, mostly women, from the late 18th century to present days.

I do not like when art just presents an idea, like some political art. For me art should be something else, something that evokes your imagination: something that you can look at and find new things in now and then.
